About the job
SiPhox Health, a Khosla Ventures, Intel Capital, and Y Combinator-backed startup, is commercializing next-generation diagnostics using silicon photonics, a platform technology for optics miniaturization that has revolutionized the data center industry over the last two decades. Our chip-based solution combines state-of-the-art biochemistry, photonics, electronics, and microfluidics to provide the power of large laboratory instruments in a portable device.
We are seeking an exceptional engineer to be part of an exciting, externally funded project to push the boundaries of continuous monitoring of complex biological systems. Our goal is to develop state-of-the-art sensor technology that will revolutionize fields ranging from medical diagnostics to biomanufacturing. If you are passionate about driving innovation and making a tangible impact in biotechnology, we invite you to join us as we explore this new frontier.
Role Overview:
We are looking for a creative Biomedical Engineer or Senior Biomedical Engineer to lead the design and development of experimental setups for novel biosensing modalities and their integration with bioassays. The ideal candidate will be equally comfortable designing components in CAD, building test rigs, running and optimizing assays in a lab environment, and analyzing assay data. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between engineering and experimental biology to deliver robust real-world solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design, adapt, and build experimental setups for biosensing experiments
- Conduct experiments to validate sensor performance and optimize assay conditions
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and optimize new biosensing systems
- Analyze data from experiments, draw conclusions, and communicate results to the team
- Create and maintain accurate records of experimental data, including documenting experimental setups and outcomes
- Troubleshoot mechanical, software, and experimental issues as they arise
- Support commercialization efforts by optimizing engineering and assay protocols
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR 820) where applicable
- Note: SiPhox is a fast-paced startup, and this is a fully in-person job that can sometimes require working long hours to meet deadlines
Qualifications
- M.S. or Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 3-8 years of experience in designing experiments and building and testing systems for biomedical applications
- Experience developing novel bioassays and running laboratory experiments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including experience in experimental design and statistical analysis
- Proficiency in programming for data analysis (Python, R, or Matlab).
- Proficiency in CAD design (Solidworks, OnShape)
- Familiarity with biosensors, microfluidics, or similar technologies
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Experience with nanoparticles, magnetics, and/or magnetic tweezers is a plus
- Familiarity with multiphysics modeling such as COMSOL Multiphysics is a plus
- Experience with medical device development and regulatory compliance is a plus
- Experience with point-of-care, at-home, and/or wearable devices is a plus
Personal Characteristics
- Sets and achieves ambitious goals, delivering outstanding and measurable results.
- Exhibits absolute personal integrity and credibility; acts with a small-team mentality but delivers outsized results
- Passionate about excellence
- Willing to take risks and challenge conventional solutions
- Creative thinker, able to think outside the box and strategically
